General Car Insurance

Types of Cover

When purchasing insurance for car there will usually be 3 options available to you –

Third Party Only Insurance (TPO)

Third Party Only (TPO) is the minimum level of insurance cover you require by law and is compulsory insurance. It covers the cost (liability) made by another person (third party) against you, for bodily injury or damage to their property. It does not provide any protection for your own vehicle.

Third Party, fire and Theft Insurance (TPFT)

Third Party, Fire and Theft (TPFT) cover includes cover provided on a TPO policy and as the name suggests, provides protection against fire damage to your vehicle and theft of your vehicle if it is recovered. It is usual for TPFT cover to be more expensive than TPO as you receive more protection, but it still does not cover damage to your own vehicle.

Fully Comprehensive Insurance (Comp)

Fully comprehensive policy (Comp) includes all of the above and any damage to your car, or if your vehicle is stolen and not recovered. If your vehicle is not recovered or damaged beyond repair, the car insurance company's will pay market value, unless you have a classic car with an agreed value policy. A fully comp policy should be the most expensive, plus consider that vehicles purchased under most car finance agreements, car loans or car credit agreements will require this form of insurance cover.
