Track Day CoverTaking your car on a track can be great fun and a safe way to test your vehicles abilities. However a track day is specifically a non-competitive event, even though it is held on an enclosed, privately run circuit and racing, timed practice and pace making is not allowed. There will be a specific number of vehicles allowed on the track at any one period for a certain length of time.
There are a number of different categories of track day:
Car Club Organised Track Days These are organised on or behalf of your classic car club and you can only participate if you are a member of that club. You can often participate in other clubs track day if the offer has been extended to their club. It is not usual for your classic car insurance to cover you for this type of event. Some insurance brokers with unique schemes have negotiated this as part of their standard classic car policy, so check if it’s included as to purchase it separately will cost around £150.
Non Car Club Organised Track Days Events organised by professional bodies such as the Association of Track Day Organisers, the Federation of Auto-Moto Event Organisers or the Association of Racing Driver Schools and are open to anyone. These will not be covered by your insurance policy, although discounted rates can be obtained from some specialist insurance brokers.
Track Days These are not organised by a club or professional body and occur when a track opens its doors and lets you on! Insurance will need to be obtained separately from a specialist insurance broker.
Hill Climbs Although hill climbs are not classed as a track day, they are similar in that they are usually organised and run by car clubs. In these events you race against the clock, up a short bendy, track or road. Vehicles are often modified to suit these conditions. Separate insurance should be arranged, as your existing policy will not cover you. Your existing insurer may be able to offer discounted rates, alternatively contact a specialist broker.
Competitive ‘On Track’ Race This is a competitive event and insurance must be arranged via a specialist broker.
In all of the above categories, cover will usually be restricted to accidental damage only and you will incur a higher excess, often starting at £1000.
