General Car Insurance

Personal Accident Cover

Personal accident cover is not designed to replace lost income or to pay for the costs of treatment or medical expenses following an accident in the car. It is simply a benefit that is given so that if compensation is not available from any other source, you will receive some benefit from your policy.

The cover provided is limited in comparison to a stand-alone personal accident policy and generally would only provide a benefit for particularly severe injuries. Similarly, the level of benefit is not large, and would in no way compensate for the severity of the injury suffered.

The following is a typical schedule of benefit:

• Death - £5,000

• Permanent Total Disablement - £5,000

• Loss of both Arms or Legs - £5,000

• Loss of One Arm or Leg - £3,000

• Loss of Sight - £3,000

• Loss of One Eye - £1,500

The cover is dependant upon the injury being sustained in a road traffic accident and would also cover you in the event that the injury was sustained in another vehicle.

There are a number of exclusions that apply to this section of cover; four are listed below:

• An injury occurring whilst intoxicated with alcohol or non-prescription drugs.

• Loss of limb or eyesight must occur within three months of the accident to qualify for the claim.

• Suicide is excluded.

• Cover often does not apply if the policyholder is aged 65 or more.

On occasions, a very limited amount of medical expenses cover is also provided for such costs arising out of a road traffic accident. This would usually be provided with a very modest limit of say £250.

If you consider personal accident cover to be an essential part of your vehicle insurance, then great care should be taken to consider policies from different insurers, as the benefits provided can differ significantly.
