Foreign TravelCruising around the French vineyards in your Austin Healey is a wonderful idea and most classic insurance policies now cater for foreign travel, but remember to check before you leave!
The 3rd EC Motor Insurance Directive 1992 states that when using a vehicle in another European Union country, your insurance must provide the minimum level required for that country’s laws or by the laws of the country where the vehicle is kept, whichever is the greater.
There is usually no additional charge for foreign travel and cover usually lasts for around 30 days. Check your policy wording to see if you have to notify your insurer and if you need to take your Certificate of Insurance as proof of cover.
If you plan to make a number of trips abroad you should also check whether the period specified under the policy applies per trip or to a maximum number of days abroad.
For travel outside the EU, you must provide your insurer with details of the proposed trip to check cover. Your insurers will issues a Green Card if necessary with is an international form of Motor Insurance Certificate that proves you have the legal minimum insurance cover needed. An additional charge is usually made.
