Making a Claim

Following any accident or damage to your vehicle, it is vital that you report the details to your insurer as soon as possible. This includes accidents where minimal damage is caused and both parties agree to repair the damage themselves.

Insurers will usually have a recommended repairer scheme, unless the vehicle is of a specialist nature such as a classic car and the insurance company are happy for you to arrange your own repairs.

Your insurance company or broker will have a dedicated claims phone number and will guide you through the claims process. You should assist the insurer and provide any information reasonably requested.

In the event of an accident you should not admit liability and should ensure that if an injury is involved that the incident is reported to the police.

Being in an accident is a very traumatic experience, so you may find the following tips helpful should this occur:

· Do not drive away. You must stop if any person or animal has been hurt, or if any vehicle or property has been damaged.

· Ask for the names and addresses of any other drivers or pedestrians. If there is another driver involved, ask for the name of his or her insurer and for their insurance policy or certificate number.

· If the accident damaged another vehicle, property or animal, you must give your name, address, vehicle registration number and show your insurance certificate to anyone who needs it. If anyone other than you is injured, you must show your insurance certificate to the police.

· Write down the names and addresses of any witnesses.

· Draw a diagram of the scene. Show as much detail as possible. Include:

· The position of all the vehicles before and after the accident.

· The speeds and distances.

· Road names and layout.

· Where witnesses were standing.

· Any other obstructions to your or other road users view.

· Anything that could be relevant to the accident.

· Do not admit you were at fault in any way or offer to make a payment. If any other person does this, remember to report it to your insurer.

You must report all accidents, particularly those involving personal injury to your insurer immediately.

A further advantage of dealing with an insurance broker is that they will often process and advise you on your claim. This can make the whole process allot less stressful and faster as they will have direct contact with the insurer. Another advantage is that they can go back to the insurer and negotiate on your behalf if you feel a payout is not acceptable.
