Age and Experience Although Billie Burke once wrote that ‘Age is something that doesn’t matter, unless you are a cheese’, this unfortunately doesn’t apply with car insurance. Age and experience is a major factor with car insurance and car insurance companies have a particular problem with young drivers, mainly because they are far more likely to have a crash and a serious one at that. The more mature readers will be glad to know that as a general rule of thumb, the older you are the less likely you are to make a claim, so the cheaper your premium. Younger drivers may want to look at the young car driver insurance information.
The longer you have held a full licence the more it will help reduce your premium as it indicates a degree of driving experience. Conversely, if you hold a provisional licence this means a lack of driving experience so a higher premium is likely to apply.
Where You Live Where you live is one of the main rating factors when determining your insurance premium. In a recent study released by Norwich Union, the UK’s top crime hot spots were Sheffield, Grimsby, and Hull. Amazingly, if you live in Sheffield, you are five times more likely to have your car stolen. The solution here is to go and move next to Jeremy Clarkeson, as the Cotswold’s is the safest location according to Direct Line.
Your Occupation Some occupations will affect the insurance premium, however it’s usually only the main driver that is of concern. Your occupation may give an indication as to the pattern of vehicle usage, which generally will be for social, domestic and pleasure and for commuting to a permanent place of work. In these situations the patterns and times of driving are fairly predicable.
If you do not travel to a permanent place of work it is classed as business use and will incur a higher premium.
